About Dr Vu Kwan

Dr Vu Kwan has expertise in all areas of general gastroenterology, with a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease, and endoscopic ultrasound and biliopancreatic diseases.

Dr Kwan is a specialist gastroenterologist practising at Norwest Private Hospital and Westmead Public Hospital. She is Head of Gastroenterology at Norwest Private Hospital and a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Sydney.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. She completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with First Class Honours at the University of Sydney.

Dr Kwan completed her postgraduate training at Westmead and Concord Hospitals.

She was awarded the Royal Australasian College of Physicians JJ Billings Overseas Travelling Fellowship, and the Westmead Hospital BJ Amos Travelling Fellowship, and completed an overseas fellowship in advanced endoscopy at the Erasmus Hospital in Brussels. She was also awarded the Gastroenterological Society of Australia Ferring Travelling Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Dr Kwan was the previous Director for Physician Training for the Westmed Network. She has held multiple roles at the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, including the Written Examination Committee, the Specialist Advisory Committee and Regional Examiner for the College.

She is an author on multiple peer reviewed publications and has written several book chapters.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is one of Dr Kwan’s areas of expertise.

EUS

She was one of the first gastroenterologists in Australia to perform EUS. Following her training in Brussels she brought back expert skills in EUS guided drainage of pancreatic collections and was an early leader of the technique in Australia. She authored one of the world’s first publications regarding EUS guided gallbladder drainage. She is the author of the GESA Endoscopy Handbook chapter ‘Endoscopic drainage of pancreatic collections’ and ‘Pancreatic fluid collections’ in the Handbook of Clinical Pancreatology.

Dr Kwan has taught EUS to specialist trainees for over 20 years, with many coming from overseas to train with her.

Dr Kwan co-leads the Inflammatory Bowel Disease service at Westmead Hospital.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

She has a weekly IBD clinic specialising in complex IBD patients. She offers biologic infusions at the Gastroenterology Day Centre. The service also specialises in IBD patients transitioning from the paediatric to adult sector. Dr Kwan is involved in multicentre IBD research trials.

Dr Kwan sees patients both with and without private health insurance. She performs procedures for insured patients at Norwest Private Hospital, and at Westmead Public Hospital for patients without private health insurance.
